Interlingual Live Subtitling for Access (ILSA) is a three-year (September 2017-August 2020) project co-financed by the European Union under the Erasmus+ programme, Key Action 2 – Cooperation for innovation and the exchange of good practices, KA203 – Strategic partnerships for higher education (reference number 2017-1-ES01-KA203-037948). As a strategic partnership promoting open and innovative practices in the digital era, ILSA will identify the skills and profile of a new professional, the interlingual live subtitler (ILSer), develop, test and validate the first training course on interlingual live subtitling (ILS) and provide a protocol for the implementation of this discipline in three real-life scenarios, namely TV, political/social settings and the classroom.

ILSers will use a technique called respeaking. Respeakers listen to the sound of a programme and simultaneously repeat or rephrase what they hear to a speech recognition software that turns these words into subtitles. This is the most common method for live subtitling but has mostly been used intralingually to provide live access for deaf people in the same language as the audio. ILSA will enable the development of ILS, a new discipline that will combine translating, subtitling and simultaneous interpreting skills. The development of this pioneering course and its transfer to society will pave the way to provide access to live audiovisual programmes, classes and social/institutional events conducted in a foreign language for deaf people and also for foreign audiences, including migrants, refugees and anybody who relies on subtitling to access live events.
