Gunter Saerens studied Germanic Languages (English and Dutch) at Ghent University. In 1998 he started working at VRT as a subtitler for the Closed Captions Department. In 2001 speech technology made its introduction at the Subtitling Department and Gunter was one of the first respeakers to work with the technology. He wrote the Stijlboek T888, which is still the set of rules for the closed caption subtitlers at VRT. In 2010 he became head of the department. He also introduced speech technology in the Translation Department. The technology is now being used for last minute translation. Gunter took part in projects such as NEON and is now one of the participants in the Flemish project called STON, which focuses on the improvement of subtitling processes.
